Using stone

It’s common to use stones to design a pond. Stones such as river pebbles or boulders, different coloured slate, sandstone, lava and basalt. This type of stone do not produce substances that compromise the quality of the water. Do not build and use stones such as limestone as they make the water hard.

Peddles and stones are mainly used for reinforcing the banks of the pond and designing the edges of the garden pond. Perforated bricks can be used to build up a quick layer as a boundary between a marginal and shallow-water zone. They are used to build plinths of water-lily baskets or a pump.

Tips on buying stones

Stones are available in different shapes and sizes from the majority of builder’s yards. You can get L-shaped and U-shaped stones at affordable prices. Natural stones are a little difficult to obtain. You can order them from natural stone-retailers. Purchase your stones from a supplier who is close to you to reduce transportation costs and difficulties.

Using wood

Gardens have numerous wooden features as it blends in quiet well in the environment and generally looks natural. It’s also easy to install and is relatively lighter than stone. Round wood, square-cut wood, planks for paths are normally pressure treated and thus are very durable. Avoid using cheap wood because it decays quickly or old railway sleepers as they contain oil.

Rounded wood and square-cut wood inserted vertically into the pond bank does two things the section of the wood that ends up in the soil will form stable bank fortifications while the section above the ground creates a decorative walkway around the pond.

Stepping stones

A swimming pond

Swimming ponds are quiet a rare phenomenon in the garden because they require much more space than a normal pond. The swimming pond should be between 30 40 sq m. the pond should have a depth of 80 150 cm. keep pets and children away from this swimming pond as they may drown.

A mini-pond for your patio or garden

Mini-ponds installed on a patio or garden creates that beautiful holiday feeling. Mini-ponds need to be re-starting every spring soon after winter. The pond should be installed in sunny positions where there is no draught.

Use containers that have a capacity of 10 litres. Surround plastic containers with wood to stop them from heating up too quick. Plants should be placed in small-mesh baskets.

Aquarium compost is the ideal planting compost. The following plant combinations are best

Dwarf water lily, lotus, purple loosestrife (Lythrum saticaria) and mare’s tail

Water fringe (Nymphoides peltata), dwarf reed mace, water hawthorn and flowering rush (Butomus)

 

The plants should be cut back occasionally and irrigated at least once a month.
