An Education Pack is available by post to any school who would like details on every aspect of planning and undertaking a visit or click here to view (3MB).

The policy of the Nature in Art Education service is to encourage young people to learn through practical activities and new experiences, and to have fun, enabling them to develop interpersonal skills whilst acquiring relevant knowledge in a stimulating environment. Schools are warmly encouraged to make full use of the exhibits in the museum collection and the facilities in the purpose-built education centre (pictured below) set within the 6 acre grounds. In addition to the education staff, artists are often available to demonstrate and teach in a variety of different media. Nature trails, pond-dipping studies and environmental activities are all available to complement the wide variety of art-based activities offered. Visits can be arranged for part of, or a whole day and can cater for students at all levels from infants to higher education and for all those with special needs.

Staff also offer an 'in schools service' with talks, films, slide presentations and practical sessions on a wide range of art and environmental issues. We can accommodate varying group sizes, usually between 25 - 70 students. Other group sizes by arrangement. Although Nature in Art is closed to the public on Mondays, we welcome school groups 7 days a week.

The Nature in Art education programme was specially commended in the 'Best Education Programme in a Museum' category of the 1995 National Heritage Museum of the Year Awards.

Nature in Art's education programme has twice been featured in the Times Educational Supplement and offers tailor made days ensuring the individual aspirations of schools are met. Infants, secondary school students, college and university groups as well as those with special needs are all welcome to take part in programmes designed just for them. As a result, FREE PRELIMINARY VISITS FOR TEACHERS are available (and encouraged) to give them the opportunity to be involved in planning a really beneficial visit. Days tightly linked to the national curriculum (particularly, but not exclusively, in art, science, geography, maths, technology and cross-curriculum), as well as other sessions with special themes are all catered for.

Staff at the museum have additional expertise in the fields of environment, conservation and the global dimension and are keen to help schools who are (or want to) address and incorporate these themes in their teaching. We have resources to support these themes.

During holiday periods we organise activity days and half-days for children. These cover a wide range of topics, not necessarily tied to the national curriculum. As with school groups, these need to be booked in advance as numbers are limited.

This is what the teachers say ...

"We all had an extremely enjoyable and interesting day with you. One of the parents has commented that he has never before known his daughter to speak at such length and with such obvious enthusiasm. Thank you for all the effort you put into making it fun and a valuable learning experience."

"We are all very impressed with the variety and scope of resources Nature in Art has to offer."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our rainforest topic and the children have gained such a lot of different things from it. Our visit was a great stimulus - exactly what we had hoped for."

"We were very happy that the work was tailored to the age level of the pupils, and pleased with the flexibility of opportunity that we were offered."

This is what the children say ...

"I've been on twelve school trips and this is the best ever."

"Very interesting and good. I learnt much with fun."

"We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We think the set up you have is wonderful, so much to do and learn."

"It's just like having a day off school."
